Tack, Sverige!

Tack, Sverige!

One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been seeing how many people are willing to do what they can to help. Early on in the fundraising process, I posted a comment on the Swedish blog Cornucopia.se, which, by the way, is one of the best places I've found to keep up with events in Ukraine in real-time. I might have hoped to receive some small monetary donations, but mostly I just wanted to share what I was doing because I thought it would be interesting to read about. Imagine my surprise when different Swedes started contacting me and offering their diving equipment!

Getting diving gear sent to Helsinki from various places in Sweden is no easy task, and in some cases, it’s not worth the effort, but the thought warms the heart, and not everyone let themselves be deterred. A couple in Yngsjö, for example, not only took the trouble to dig through their storage in search of suitable equipment but also did an ozone treatment on the probably somewhat musty gear and then mailed it to me via DHL. A week after our first contact, I could add their donation to our steadily growing collection. Fantastic, thanks so much!

My surprise grew even more when I was contacted from Nyköping. A very generous person sent a long list of various equipment they were willing to part with, most of which consisted of different types of tools, but there were also a couple of diving tanks and a gasoline-powered compressor. Exactly what we needed, absolutely incredible! The logistics were again a bit of a challenge, but it was resolved in the best possible way: We had previously collaborated with the Swedish aid organization Blågula Bilen, so I contacted them and asked if they might have a vehicle heading down that route that could bring the compressor (and the tanks) to our partners in Poland. We could then pick them up there on our way down from Finland, for delivery to the final recipients with the border guards in Kyiv. It didn’t take long before everything was arranged, and the compressor is currently in a vehicle somewhere on the road in Europe.

So an enormous thank you to our dear friends and allies in Sweden. I know that many there are still investigating the possibility of contributing in various interesting ways, and I hope to be able to return to these if and when they materialize.
